Metal Braces
Traditional metal braces are the most widely used type of fixed orthodontic appliance.
Traditional metal braces are a reliable, effective, and economical option that have stood the test of time for over a century.
Though past incarnations have been bulky, awkward, or even painful, today's metal braces are smaller, lighter, and more comfortable to wear than ever before.
You can even choose gold braces.
Clear Braces
While traditional metal braces remain the most popular option for orthodontic treatment, ceramic braces can be a great choice for some patients. Sometimes known as clear braces, ceramic braces provide a much less noticeable method of treatment.
Ceramic braces use the same components as traditional braces, but instead of metal, the brackets on the front side of the teeth are made of see-through ceramic material.
Although the technology behind ceramic braces is constantly improving, they currently do tend to be a little less durable than their metal counterparts and are more likely to break.
Invisalign® & Invisalign® for Teens
Unlike traditional braces, this kind of orthodontic treatment doesn’t rely on a system of metal or ceramic brackets and wires. The Invisalign system is made up of a series of custom clear trays called aligners that are removable and nearly invisible.
Their soft plastic also means no friction or abrasions inside the mouth, so they are more comfortable to wear. The aligners are changed out weekly, and when worn the recommended 20-22 hours per day, will gradually move your teeth into the best position for your smile.
As mentioned, Invisalign works best with mild to moderate orthodontic issues, so it may not be the best choice for everyone. At your free consultation, we can find out if Invisalign is right for you.
Fixed vs. Removable Appliances
It’s important to understand the difference between fixed and removable appliances.
Fixed appliances, like braces, are attached to your teeth and aren’t taken off until you complete your treatment.Removable appliances, like Invisalign’s aligner system, are worn about 20-22 hours a day but can be taken off easily.
Aside from the obvious differences, Invisalign aligners are best at treating mild to moderate orthodontic problems. Fixed appliances are generally needed for more serious and comprehensive treatment.
Ortho for all ages
There’s no minimum age for your child to begin orthodontic treatment, but the American Association of Orthodontists recommends a child receive their first orthodontic evaluation by around the age of seven.
